Preventing and Healing from Autistic Burnout

Saturday 2 April, 9am to 4pm and Sunday 3 April, 3.30pm (optional checkin Fri 1st & checkout Mon 4th).

Actually Autistic Care is proud and excited to present our first #actuallyautistic retreat, a weekend away on the Sunshine Coast in Qld in a peaceful hideaway on two hectares of mature gardens.

Accommodations are very flexible. You can stay on site or visit as a day visitor. (**n.b. all our on-site sleeping has sold out… **) A variety of sleeping arrangements are available in the house, or book somewhere nearby that suits you, join us for day activities and go back to your own accommodation at night for deep solitude.

What’s included?

  • Onsite accommodation is limited but flexible. (**n.b. onsite accommodation has sold out**) Contact us to discuss your preferences and needs. Alternately, we offer FREE assistance booking your external accommodation.
  • An individual physiotherapy consultation.
  • All individual and group activities provided by us.
  • Support group session.
  • A guided walk around the extensive gardens by the owner of the property (TBC according to weather and owner’s availability).
  • Lunch, tea, coffee, a variety of milks and light snacks each day (GF, DF and vegan options).
  • A folder for take-home materials.
  • Guided mindfulness and meditation activities.
  • Tai Chi.
  • Arts and crafts materials.
  • Pleasurable wanderings through the gardens at your leisure.
  • A sensory retreat room.

All activities are optional, of course. No one will force you to do anything.

The aims of our retreat are for you to:

  • Connect with other autistic people in peaceful, calming surrounds, boosting our social esteem and sense of self.
  • Enjoy a range of activities to support mindfulness, calmness, empowerment and presence.
  • Provide a ‘circuit’ breaker to daily life, thereby assisting with the prevention of burnout.
  • Contribute to a healing journey for the recovery of burnout.
  • Walk away with new ideas for maintaining energy levels.

Your Retreat Hosts

Josephine Moon (Jo/she/her) has worked as a teacher, an editor, a workshop facilitator (in various healing modalities) and retreat organiser and has been a best-selling author since 2012. She is the Business Coordinator of the AAC Health Group and her particular passion is building the branch of Actually Autistic Care, coordinating the Meetup events and retreats. Having experienced no less than four prolonged autistic burnouts in her life, she is passionate about prevention and healing. She is autistic.

Alwyn Blayse (Alwyn/he/him) is a physiotherapist with over 20 years experience in hydrotherapy, rehabilitation, aged care and complex needs. He is currently the CEO of the AAC Health Group, overseeing programs in residential aged care and community work. Alwyn will be joining us at times over the weekend, offering a free physiotherapy consultation for body issues, rehabilitation and/or energy conservation. He is autistic and ADHD.

Retreat Terms and Information

  • Diagnosed, self-diagnosed and querying autistics are welcome.
  • Accommodation options will be sold on a ‘first paid, first in’ basis.
  • The minimum numbers of participants required to proceed with the retreat is 3 and will be capped at a maximum of 8
  • You are responsible for organising your own transport to and from the retreat. However, if you would like assistance, we can do this for you for FREE.
  • If you choose to stay off site, you may organise your own accommodation OR we can do this for you for FREE.
  • We do not have the ability to cater for dinner guests at this time. You may bring your own food for dinner, head out for dinner, or have dinner delivered. There is a fridge, microwave, cooktop and oven in the house. Shops are located 10 minutes away.
  • The retreat house does not include disability access accommodations. We hope to be able to offer that in future retreats.
  • Participants must be at least 18 years of age and able to self-manage for the duration of the retreat. (We are not able to offer carers at this time. This is something we hope to be able to offer in future retreats.) We may accept a teenager accompanied by a paying adult (parent/guardian) upon application.
  • There is a pool onsite. If you use the pool it is entirely at your own risk. No supervision is provided for the pool.
  • This is a wellness retreat focused on finding peace and calm. For that reason, for the comfort and respect of other other guests:
    • This retreat is a non-smoking event (including vaping or e-cigarettes) both inside the house and in the grounds.
    • As well, we ask that you do not use the television inside the retreat home to avoid sensory overload to other guests. You are more than welcome to bring your own personal devices and earphones or ear buds to enjoy these without interrupting others with visual or noise intrusions.
    • We ask that you keep your mobile phone on silent.

Payment and Payment Terms

  • EARLY BIRD COST: $380 for two days of retreat activities if paid in full by 30 January 2022
  • FULL COST: $430 for two days of retreat activities if paid after 30 January 2022
